Styling your wardrobe while trying to get healthy
Is it possible to be equally as excited and nervous at the same time? I am because I’m delving into the subject of weight, a very personal and sensitive issue, understandably so. Here’s the thing, I’ve been considering starting a youtube channel for over three years. When I finally decided I would create a channel, I went back and forth on what my channel would be about since I’m what they’ve recently termed, multi-passionate. (I’m pretty sure the term used to be confused and unfocused). I’ve chosen style and fashion to start me off on this new adventure; although I’m sure as we go along, I’ll create and share content regarding my other interests and passions, which include; home decor, food, beauty, and wellness.
PS: I’m sharing some photos of me from the earlier to most recent, and please be gentle with me for a better context.
In case you can’t tell, I’m a curvy girl, and for a long time, I was determined to hide these ample curves. You could say I was quite the tomboy. Baggy t-shirts and oversized sweatpants were a norm for me. I’m so glad I didn’t take photos back then either. Time has passed, and to say I’ve come a long way with my style is an understatement. I’ve finally learned to love my curvature and how to dress my body. This newfound appreciation brings me to style, my true love.
“Fashion is what you buy; Style is what you do with it.” ~ unknown
Fashion and style may seem synonymous, but both carry different meanings. What’s the difference, you ask?
Fashion is what is being offered and worn by most people at that particular moment in time. It’s a trend that doesn’t usually last long. When you are following fashion, you often end up looking like everyone else.
Style is more personal; it’s about using what is being offered, to cultivate a wardrobe that looks and feels good on you. It’s about creating something that is unique to you and makes you feel confident and beautiful. It can be dressy, casual, comfortable, or mix of either. In my opinion, style is what you do with the fashion that’s available in the market.
In my experience, being a curvy girl, and loving fashion used to be a bit of an oxymoron, very contradictory. As you can imagine, this caused quite the challenge when trying to be fashionable while cultivating personal style. If what is available doesn’t work with your body, what then? Thankfully, many brands now recognize that all women are not all built the same, and it’s about time. Can I get an Amen?
My weight has often fluctuated over the years. I’ve been 130 pounds at my smallest and 230 pounds at my heaviest. I’m currently 185 pounds with quite a ways to get back to my healthier weight range of 130 to 140 pounds. This isn’t necessarily about weight loss, although we could talk about that from time to time. It’s more about navigating fashion and style while working to either lose or gain weight—the ups and downs of dressing for a body in progress. I don’t know about you, but I can’t afford to buy an entirely new wardrobe each time my weight changes. It would be a waste and a shame to do so. It can be disheartening, depressing even, trying to put together looks that you’d love to wear, but feeling like your body just won’t let you.
Let’s be real. If your weight fluctuates, then like me, you probably have three or more categories of clothing in your closet. (it’s okay, I’m right there with you)
- One section of clothes that fit (they are probably in the dryer right now because they are in constant rotation)
- One that used to fit and will likely never again because you wore those items before you fully developed, but you can’t bring yourself to let them go.
- One section has items you can realistically get back into if you work at it.
This struggle is why I’m starting a youtube channel because I am guilty of all the above. I want to share my process in real-time as I style my unintended capsule wardrobe as well as take you through my thought process as I start to add new items to my closet. I hope sharing my methods will be encouraging, inspiring, and informative for anyone out there, struggling with the same things. We’re in this together.
I’m going to show you what fits me right now, and how I’ll be styling myself while working on getting to a healthier weight.
I think it’s important I give some context to my upcoming content on both my youtube channel and right here on my website. You can watch the videos here on my website, or click here to go directly to my youtube channel. Feel free to subscribe and turn the notification bell on in advance if you’d like. The first video will be up Sunday, May 10th.
Happy mothers day to all the mothers and mother figures out there; you are appreciated and valued more than you will ever know. We salute you.
Thank you so much for spending time with me,
